We hear you, experiencing tooth sensitivity is no fun! Having teeth that are hypersensitive to hot and cold or even spicy can make eating even your favourite food become your worst nightmare. You might feel an annoying discomfort, or it might even cause you pain. Don’t give up all your favourite foods! Here’s how you can combat sensitive teeth:
1. Protect your enamel
Your tooth gets sensitive because the enamel is worn down exposing the dentine. Brushing twice a day is recommended, but brushing too hard is not. It is actually possible to cause abrasion to your teeth and their outer protective layer. Contrary to what might work on your floors, the harder the brush isn’t better. Dental experts recommend using a soft toothbrush instead. Don’t worry, it does the job, but it doesn’t harm your enamel. 2. Fix your teeth
If any of your teeth are broken or cracked, it can run all the way down to the root, causing uncomfortable sensations in reaction to cold especially. Head to your dentist and check if any of your teeth need work on them. In the meantime, get some sensitive toothpaste to help relieve the unpleasant sensations
3. Stop grinding your teeth
People do it on TV to show they’re angry. You don’t have to. It only harms your teeth and causes sensitivity problems for you! Granted, you might not even know you’re doing it in your sleep. Get your partner, housemate or a family member to take note if you do, and see about getting a mouth guard to prevent further night-time grinding activities.
4. Brush with a toothpaste for sensitive teeth
Pearlie White has a range of toothpastes specially formulated for teeth sensitivity. Not only does it help with the discomfort and pain, but our Active Remineralization Fluoride Free toothpaste actually contains hydroxyapatite, one of the main minerals teeth enamel is made of. By brushing regularly with this toothpaste, you’re actually helping to repair your demineralized enamel! It also contain xylitol which raises the pH level of saliva, encouraging the natural minerals in your saliva to be deposited into demineralized tooth enamel. It’s like a factory in there producing more enamel for your teeth.
5. Treat your gums good
Usually your gums are there to protect the roots of your teeth, but unfortunately if you have a problem with your gums, such as receding gums, then that exposes your roots and causes even more sensitivity. The roots of your teeth don’t even have enamel to protect them, by the way. So to make sure you take care of your gums, brush with Pearlie White’s Advanced Gum Health Fluoride toothpaste.
6. Don’t bleach your teeth
Sometimes teeth whitening treatments can cause increased sensitivity because of the chemicals involved in the procedures. But really, you can save your teeth, and not to mention your wallet. A lot of what discolours your teeth lies in the foods and drinks you consume. Cutting down on coffee and smoking, for example, can really bring positive results.
7. Look out for potassium nitrate + fluoride
Fluoride can help strengthen and even repair some of that enamel you’re so sorely lacking. If you don’t see the word “fluoride” on the ingredients list, look for “sodium monofluorophosphate”, which is what it’s known as. Potassium nitrate is another thing what you want to look out for because it blocks the pain signals in your teeth so that you can enjoy your favourite foods without fear of experiencing pain from teeth sensitivity.
8. Maintain. Maintain
This one’s about keeping things in your mouth good-to-go, you know, whenever a promotion for a buffet comes around? Pearlie White’s Fluorinze Alchohol Free Fluoride Mouth Rinse can be used every day to relieve teeth sensitivity and strengthen tooth enamel. Plus it contains Tea Tree Oil and Thymol which fight plaque and cavities which could potentially cause further sensitivity.
